The 89-year-old philosopher and logician Bertrand Russell, seen in the centre of the photograph, was renowned for his social activism during the 1950s and 60s. Russell was a founder of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in 1958. The anti-Polaris - submarine-launched ballistic missiles - sit-down protest took place outside the Ministry of Defence in 1961. Russell received a two-month prison sentence which was reduced on appeal to one week, for his anti-nuclear protesting. He died aged 97 in 1970.
