'Tom getting the best of a Charley'. A night scene on the east side of Temple Bar. Tom overturns a watchman's box, much to the alarm of the old watchman inside whose colleague raises the alarm with a rattle. Jerry, with two ladies of the town on his arms, guffaws. From Pierce Eganâ's Life in London; or, The Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn, Esq. and his elegant friend Corinthian Tom, accompanied by Bob Logic, The Oxonian, in their Rambles and Sprees through the Metropolis', (1820-1821) a work which was issued in monthly parts from October 1820 to July 1821. The words were written after the illustrations, and the characters became by-words and appeared on stage and on ranges of merchandise - fans, tea-trays, snuff boxes etc. This print was reproduced on a handkerchief.
