A horse-drawn cart belonging to the Midland Railway Company was photographed at the Surrey Commercial Docks waiting to take part of a cargo of paper from the S.S. Castor. These docks were not linked by rail, so carts and vans would take some of the imported products to the railways to be sent countrywide. A year after this photo was taken The Midland Railway was merged with many other companies to form the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. Surrey Commercial Docks primarily handled timber imported from Canada, North America, Scandinavia and Russia.
