Old houses in Bermondsey Street, 1881.
Timber-framed houses like these dated back to the 16th and early 17th centuries and were still common in Southwark and the surrounding areas at the beginning of the 19th century. However, by the time this photograph was taken they had become something of a rarity.
This photograph was commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London to form part of a permanent visual record of historic buildings threatened with alteration or possible demolition in the 1870s and 80s.
