Mr Cannon, seated on the right, a displayer of cheap advertising boards on walls or fences, known as a 'wall worker', c.1877. The boards had to be removed each night and replaced again in the morning. Mr Cannon had been a prosperous shoe maker whose business had been ruined by the Crimean War, causing him to fall on hard times.
