'Mods' on motor scooters near Richmond, 1964. The favoured mode of transport for Mods was the motor scooter, usually the Italian-designed Lambretta or Vespa, often festooned with lights and mirrors.
This photo was taken in a year that saw running battles between mods and rockers. Many of these occurred in seaside towns near London such as Clacton, Margate and Brighton.
Terry Spencer photographed this group of mods as they turned from Upper Richmond Road. Spencer worked for Life Magazine photographing youth culture during the 1960s.
