description
Topical Press Agency photograph of Emmeline Pankhurst addressing a crowd. Typed on the back is 'SUFFRAGETTES HOOTED IN NEW YORK. Mrs Pankhurst being jeered at while making a speech at Wall Street, New York'. Although some of the spectators in this crowd may have jeered her, Emmeline Pankhurst raised over £4,000 for suffragette organisation the Women’s Social and Political Union during a trip to New York between October and December 1913. Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughter Christabel were joint leaders of the WSPU. Christabel was living in exile in Paris to avoid imprisonment in London for militant suffragette activities.
